The following MN TRiO participants were awarded scholarships in the November 2012 competition:

Peter Trandem, Minnesota State University, Mankato Talent Search - Paul and Sheila Wellstone Award 2012

Peter Trandem will graduate from Mankato East high school in 2013 and has been a member of the Minnesota State University Mankato Educational Talent Search program for the past four years. Peter will be attending the University of Minnesota Carlson School of Managment fall of 2013. Peter's journey to this level of success has not been easy or without great effort. Peter was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome and ADHD early in his life making academic and social success challenging. Peter describes his early social interactions as feeling alienated and said many of his peers were afraid of him as he over reacted to frustration with academics and went into a panic. Peter decided he needed things to be different and he set goals to achieve academically, develop good friendships and create a future path for himself that would set him up for the success he dreamed of. Peter has worked extremely hard and accomplished all that. He has strong friendships because he taught his friends to help him identify when he was overreacting or stepping on boundaries. He enrolled in AP courses, sought assistance when needed and gave 100% effort and has achieved a 4.286 GPA. And by making his college search/selection a top priority he is going to his dream college: the University of MN. TRIO provided the opportunities, Peter provided the drive and desire to make the most of each and every one of those opportunities to be where he is today on his way to a future as a successful accountant.

Elliot K Doren, Century College, EOC/SSS - Ronald McKinley Award 2012

Doren currently is an honor student in his second year at Century with a nearly perfect GPA and a plan to transfer to the University of Minnesota to earn a bachelor’s degree in engineering. He is currently taking calculus and physics and doing very well. The Century College Foundation also awarded him a scholarship and he is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.

“I am thrilled with my life,” said Doren. “It may not seem like much to some people, but it is amazing to me. I am poor and I have an old car, but I have my son and a place to live. And I am proud of my success as a student. For the first time in my life, I am confident that I have the ability and the help I need to be successful. I owe that to the TRiO program and to the support that I have received each step of the way. I now have the means to rise above the cycle of poverty and destruction from which I came, the ability to create my own future and the confidence I need to be successful.”
